geometry expanded

It seams the more we work with geometry in class the more detail we have started to get into in regards to shape. No longer are shapes only classified as squares, triangles, etc but are now put into more complex and detailed groups. For example; A square is not just a square it is also a polygon, regular polygon, a quadrilateral, according to the definition it could also be classed as a parallelogram.

In planing for this unit I found a lot of information that students can use and access easily. Here are some of the things that I have found or use that you may find useful in developing your understanding of Geometry. You can always refer to the scope and sequence post to see what you need to know (this doesn't mean your learning has to stop there!)

Math open reference website is very good for definitions and being able to interact and manipulate shapes. This site is good for many other maths applications, You can find the home page here

Khan Academy have a very detailed explanation and definition of quadrilaterals. There is a video as well as an interactive lesson for students to follow and partake in. You can find this here. Khan Academy has lessons for many other areas of geometry, you can find them here. I can not stress how good Khan Academy is as an online learning tool and reference for students taking charge of their own learning. It covers all areas of maths and caters for students from around Year 4 and up.
